Frafra
The joy of Farafra is its simplicity. Farafra is the most isolated places, yet there is evidence to support the theory that it binds the entire western desert together. Farafra is part of the new valley governerate with over 60 thousand acres of land being prepared for development in a new agricultural scheme that brought many immigrants to the area. in addition to agriculture, tourism is being developed, 2 new hotels have been erected and open for business. Now 2 thousand tourista are expexted yearly. Farafra depression is the second largest depression in the western desert, spanning 90 kilometers east west and 200 kilometers north south. The depression floor comprises a mixture of white chalk and lime stone which creates the white desert, black iron pyrites and marcasite stone which create the black desert. There are 3 major mountains in Farafra. 2 bare the same name Gebel Al Gunna. The third, twin peaks, is a major land mark. The most outstanding mountain features in the western desert are the white chalk Inselbergs. A 20 kilometer long series of free standing hills that look like icebergs. Water, a major problem in Farafra, is one of the reasons it remained so primitive for so long. recent exlporation however has determined that there is enough water for agricultural development.
